“Imagine That” is an animation screening curated by Sarah Klein that features kid-made cartoons, suitable for adults, and adult-made animations fitting for kids. Featuring a variety of techniques and approaches these animations explore the limits of outer space, familiar landscapes, big places and small spaces.

Reading and Drawing Hour with Matt Furie and Aiyana Udesen
Spend the afternoon scribbling with local artists Matt Furie and Aiyana Udesen! After reading a few of their favorite children’s books, the artists will be available to answer questions and draw with kids.

Electric Works is pleased to announce McSweeney’s McMullens: Artwork from Children’s Books, plus 1,032 Illustrated Lunch Bags, a group show celebrating the artwork of McSweeney’s McMullens, the children’s book imprint launched by McSweeney’s earlier this year.

IN THE MAIN GALLERY: the exhibition will focus on the original artwork from the first several books in the series, as well as sneak peeks at the artwork from a handful of books in progress. The main gallery will feature work by Lisa Brown, Jordan Crane, Matt Furie, Walter Green, Lisa Hanawalt, Ian Huebert, Jason Jägel, Amy Martin, Brian McMullen, Jon & Tucker Nichols, Scott Rideout, Scott Teplin and many others.

Please note a change of hours for this exhibition: in addition to our regular hours, we will be open on the following Sundays, Noon-5 PM: December 4, December 11, and December 18th.

Electric Works is pleased to announce McSweeney’s McMullens: Artwork from Children’s Books, plus 1,032 Illustrated Lunch Bags, a group show celebrating the artwork of McSweeney’s McMullens, the children’s book imprint launched by McSweeney’s earlier this year.

IN THE MAIN GALLERY: the exhibition will focus on the original artwork from the first several books in the series, as well as sneak peeks at the artwork from a handful of books in progress. The main gallery will feature work by Jordan Crane, Matt Furie, Walter Green, Lisa Hanawalt, Ian Huebert, Jason Jägel, Amy Martin, Brain McMullen, Tucker Nichols, Scott Rideout, Scott Teplin and many others.

THE READING ROOM: for this exhibition, we are transforming our Project Space into a Children’s Reading Room. The space will feature a wall with hundreds of hand-illustrated paper lunch bags by visual artist Robert Barnes. Additionally we will be providing deluxe reading stations for our smaller visitors complete with a bookcase holding current McMullen’s releases, Electric Works and McSweeney’s staff favorites.

EVENTS: Throughout the exhibition there will be many many events. Stay tuned for exact dates and details, but we will be hosting a series of celebrity story times for the little ones. On each Saturday and Sunday, we will feature a different notable from the Bay Area to read aloud their favorite stories to kids. We will be presenting Imagine That, an animation screening curated by Sarah Klein that features kid-made cartoons suitable for adults and adult-made animations suitable for kids.

STORE: Imagine our bookstore. Now imagine it overflowing with many copies of all the latest McSweeney’s McMullens titles. Now add on a bunch of new items for the holiday season: fish-scrubbing gloves, banana slicers, books about East German toy design and you’ve got what awaits you this winter at Electric Works.

Electric Works will be closed on Thursday. It’s our special day to give thanks…not just for the obvious, like food, but for the multitude of blessings that we have received this year.

Artist Reception: Friday, December 3, 6-8 PM

Electric Works is pleased to put some sparkle in the season with Stella Luminosa, a group show featuring Dave Eggers, Matt Furie, Ian Huebert, Jason Jägel, Keegan McHargue, Clare Rojas, and Gina Tuzzi. For the month of December the gallery will be populated by characters and landscapes that are both strangely familiar and familiarly strange. The works are distinguished by graphic mark making that evoke at once a childlike enhancement along with adult intrigue and sophistication. Gallery artist Jason Jägel will be taking over the Project Space filling it with an exuberant installation of recent paintings.

Believer Magazine Art Issue
Release Party: Thursday, December 9, 7:30- 9:30 PM

In conjunction with Stella Luminosa, we will be featuring many artists who make an appearance in the Believer magazine’s 2010 Art Issue. We welcome them to the gallery and look forward to their contributions. On December 9th, from 7:30 – 9:30 PM, we will be hosting a release party of this special issue of the Believer, featuring many esteemed guests, including a musical performance by Peggy Honeywell a.k.a. Clare Rojas, interviewed by Natasha Boas in the issue. Photographer Michael Light, interviewed by Lawrence Weschler in the issue, will give a presentation on his new work of aerial photographs of Los Angeles.
