We found out yesterday that Spain Rodriguez passed away. For those of you who don’t know, Spain was an immensely influential comix artist in the Bay Area (and national and international scene). A crew that included R. Crumb, Trina Robbins, S. Clay Wilson, Jay Kinney, and Guy Colwell among many others, these folks had some of the most far-reaching influence of any Bay Area art scene.
Gallery partner Noah Lang, a neighbor of Spain, fondly remembers running into him at least once a week for the last few years. “He’d dart in his house and bring out a comic or poster for me or my kids. A really sweet guy and a hell of an artist. He’ll be missed.”
Electric Works was pleased to work with Spain to produce “Trashman” for our mini-print series.
The Chronicle posted this obituary.
